Golf Putters

Golf putters are specialized golf clubs that are generally used on the putting green. The putter club is considered as an indispensable club in a golfer’s bag, because the act of putting is taken as the most precise aspect in the game. This has lead to the careful design of golf putters for smooth strokes, polished impacts, good glides, and bounce-less ball launch.

Golf PuttersThe effective design angles for golf putters loft should not be less than 5 degrees, and not more than 10 degrees. Among the other clubs, the golf putters are the only clubs with bent shafts enabling for the placement of the line of the straight part of the shaft at the “sweetpot”, for the best putt. Moreover, accuracy is increased because the golfer can direct their swing through the ball as the bent shaft eliminates the perception that the golfer is behind the ball.

Traditionally, the clubheads of golf putters are made by forging, which is similar to the production of iron clubs. However, the process of forging has resulted into clubheads which are short, thick, and slightly curved form front to rear. This has lead to the evolution of the design of the clubhead through investment casting method. The casting method has opened different designs and configurations for golf putters’ clubheads. Furthermore, casted clubheads are cheaper and easier to produce in large quantities than forged ones. Moreover, casted clubheads have L-shaped side profile, with a thinner flat clubface. Unlike the forged clubheads, the weight of the head is concentrated on its perimeters, resulting into an increased inertia of the clubhead. New materials have also improved the performance of clubheads.

Variations of golf putters include long-shaft putters, chippers, and trainers. The long-shaft golf putters are those that have longer shaft lengths ang grips than the typical 31-35 inches shaft length. These longer shafts limit the degrees of freedom of a golfer which would influence his putting consistency. Chippers on the other hand are similar in appearance and feel to the typical golf putters, with a higher loft of 30-35 degrees though. The higher loft angles are responsible for lifting the ball out into the green. Trainers however are training tools that guide golfers into the correct techniques of putting. Trainers such as the breakaway, trains a golfer to have a steady putting motion by eliminating the sudden pressure applied by the hands in swinging the club.
